Madla Pospíšilová Karasová: author reading

A Sunday morning author reading by Uničov writer Madla Pospíšilová Karasová at Zahrádka Na Nivách. The morning also includes a creative workshop for children and a picnic.

About the author

Madla Pospíšilová Karasová

Madla Pospíšilová Karasová is the mysterious alter ego of a woman from a region notorious for its witch trials. We are delighted that at UFF she will read from her latest book, the children’s detective story Vyšetřovatelka Terka: Záhada ztracených koťat (Investigator Terka: The Mystery of the Lost Kittens).

She made her literary debut in 2020 with the darkly humorous Kronika rodu Příšeráků (The Chronicle of the Monsterly Clan), a scandalously candid diary of the early days of her marriage and of growing into motherhood, published by Epocha.

Besides making fun of everything and everyone (herself most of all), she also enjoys scaring people. That is also why, rather late in life, she started teaching at a secondary school.

Over time, her short stories have appeared both in print magazines (Pandora revue, XB-1 magazine, Krátký řez) and in online media (LUK – Literatura – Umění – Kultura, Sarden, HororrCon, České detektivky).

Her writing often tackles difficult subjects, and she also enjoys working with real cases; in February 2023 the publisher Golden Dog released her novella V pekle jsme všichni Hébert (In Hell We Are All Hébert), a literary treatment of the authentic experiences of children in Canadian Christian orphanages.

In 2024 her short story Afík appeared in the anthology Smečka, and her story Dobrý manžel appeared in the bestselling anthology V Královských zahradách. That same year Golden Dog published Němý křik (Silent Scream), a collection of thirteen of her texts.

A year later she compiled Bolestíny, an anthology of women’s horror that weaves together stories steeped in pain, shadows, and confessions. The collection closes with her Starý dům (The Old House), which tells the story of a real house in Uničov. The anthology made the long list of the Magnesia Litera award for 2026.

That same year she transcribed from Kurrent (old German script) and adapted a historical horror story. Líska aneb rukopis červenokostelecký ku obraně jedné siroty nebohé sepsaný is a truly brutal and singular book, available only from the Golden Dog online store and released in a limited edition of 300 copies.

She switches genres the way Czech celebrity Agáta Hanychová switches partners, and besides horror she also writes fairy tales and humor.

She adores sleep, reading, dry red wine, and the three men in her cottage.

On her Facebook page Zápisky zhrzené spisovatelky (Notes of a Jilted Writer), she likes to poke fun at everything and everyone — most often at herself.
