Exhibition: Rostislav Czudek

The installation Znám jednu krásnou zahradu (I Know a Beautiful Garden) is an intimate personal confession and, at the same time, a universal exploration of the human need for safety. It grows out of the artist’s own refuge — the need to escape the ever-present fatigue, the pressure to be useful, and the noise of bad news from the outside world.

This imaginative space has real roots; it draws on a deeply held memory of his grandmother’s garden, which in the human mind often functions as an archetype of absolute safety and freedom from care. The central motif of the work is a being asleep among the grasses. Sleep here expresses the highest form of trust in the surrounding space. Beneath a decorated quilted “roof” and behind a fragment of fence that serves as a deliberate shield against the world outside, the figure can finally let its guard down and, for a while, simply be.
