Introduction:

From the very beginning, humans have been in daily contact with animals, and their survival depended on them. It was only logical, then, that the appearance, qualities, and meaning of animals entered the nonverbal language through which people spoke of their world and their lives. Animals have appeared in visual art since time immemorial; they are an inseparable part of prehistoric cave paintings and of the hieroglyphs of ancient Egypt. They play an irreplaceable role in the symbolism of every culture around the world. Within each culture, they function as a universally understood sign, based on the commonly known and accepted character of the animal. An animal embodied in a particular work becomes a speaking emblem that explains the essence of the scene, with the magic power to transfer its character onto other chosen participants in it.

The art of the 20th century, so tellingly devoted to testing fundamental values by shaking, inverting, violating, and caricaturing them, naturally engages richly with the animal theme — whether in its traditional symbolic sense, as when David Černý preserved St. Wenceslas “on horseback,” only somewhat upside down; or in entirely new situations and meanings, as when Joseph Beuys in the 1970s responded to his own life experience with an action in which he spent several days in a closed room with a live coyote, or when he explained pictures to a dead hare. One of the iconic works of the 20th century is considered to be the shark preserved in formaldehyde by the controversial, world-famous artist Damien Hirst.

Animals influence the human world. Observing and studying them is reflected in every field of art (fashion, industrial and graphic design, music, literature, photography, sculpture, painting…).

This year, animals will influence Fotofestival Uničov.
