Fotofestival Uničov 5
May 1–3, 2015

The first edition of the photography festival in Uničov took place in 2011. Since then it has grown into an annual weekend gathering that brings together diverse genres and artistic languages, reaching well beyond photography alone. Mixing genres, interweaving media, materials, and subjects is also the loose theme of this year’s fifth edition. The independent work of professional photographers often follows a different path from their commercial commissions. This year’s photography exhibitions focus on trained photographers whose independent practice departs from their field of study, whether in subject matter or in the very material they work with. Questions that have been asked many times before arise once again: who is an author, what constitutes one, and what counts as their work — everything they create, with various intentions and purposes, or only a certain slice of it? This year’s program includes exhibitions by Tereza Příhodová, Nikola Tláskalová, and Vendula Knopová, as well as a joint exhibition by Jan Regal, Jaroslav Prokop, and Jan Jindra. Theoretical talks and concerts are planned as well. Muzeum baroka will host talks by Michaela Čadilová, by two members of the graphic design studio Deep Throat, and Peter Gonda’s talk on theater projects with non-actors, Hladanie autenticity (In Search of Authenticity). On Saturday evening there will be a concert by the project tyto alba, made up of members of Kyklos Galaktikos — Jan Burian and Michaela Švédová. A large part of the program will take place in Uničov’s Baroque Koncertní síň and the adjoining Galerie U Minoritů. A performance by Svietlana Silich and Anna Ugolkova will be staged in the sacristy next to Koncertní síň. Matyáš Chochola and Ladislav Vondrák will be coming too. (Text: Klára Židková)

Fri 17:00 — EXHIBITION
Tereza Příhodová – Žhavé uhlí polykat
Malá galerie, Bří Čapků 690

Tereza Příhodová studied photography at FAMU in Prague. In her own work, photography ceases to be a medium of recording and preservation and becomes rather one of the materials from which she builds her collages, objects, and installations. As parts of wooden artifacts or combined with oil painting, her scorched photographs of mysterious landscapes and forests read more as symbols of decay, of a return to an original state, than as a medium that seeks to overcome time.

Fri 18:00 — EXHIBITION
Vendula Knopová – Výchovný tutorial
Teta gallery, Šternberská 498

“Hey, couldn’t get through to you. You eating something?” – “Mom, I’m just going to poop.” – “Well, then I guess you’re eating something…” Výchovný tutorial (A Parenting Tutorial) is a best-of from my mom’s hard drive, which first had to undergo a proper culling of shots of pets and natural disasters. I’m Vendula and I belong in the “Big Kids” folder. Big kid Vendula Knopová also graduated from the advertising photography studio in Zlín. She returns to her family with her camera regularly. And perhaps every time she takes pictures, she goes back to childhood. She brings out into the light ironic scenes, absurd fantasies, silly bits, and crazy kids’ games with their own rules that are so awesome you have to play them for at least ten hours straight.

Fri 19:00 — THEATER PERFORMANCE
Svietlana Silich and Anna Ugolkova – STYX
Šatlava (muzeum vězeňství), Příční 205

STYX is an original performance about a fish funeral. A reflection on the unsuspected or unacknowledged connections surrounding the preparation of a classic Belarusian holiday dish — shuba, or “herring under a fur coat.” On the plate, the scraped herring is covered with layers of salad, potatoes, onion, and beetroot and topped with mayonnaise. Cooking as ritual.

Fri 20:30 — EXHIBITION
J. Regal & J. Prokop & J. Jindra – 70. – 90. léta
Galerie U Minoritů, Haškova 217
EXHIBITION

This group exhibition, originally prepared for the Photogether Gallery in Zlín, looks back at the advertising photography of Jan Regal (b. 1938), Jaroslav Prokop (b. 1950), and Jan Jindra (b. 1962). The exhibition focuses exclusively on analog advertising images from the period between the 1970s and the 1990s. The photographs include clean compositions as well as elaborate tricks and montages. The exhibition presents what lay behind the advertising images themselves, since the selected original negatives were mostly lost or destroyed in printing. Torn from their context, these images seem to resonate with contemporary aesthetics.

Fri 21:00/22:00 — CONCERT
M. Švédová and J. Burian (Kyklos Galaktikos) – live set
Koncertní síň, Haškova 217

Instrumental hip hop, dub, bass, improvisation, atmospheric loops, slow hypnotic beats. Two come cheaper than three. Jan Burian and Michaela Švédová are members of the band Kyklos Galaktikos. The official trio, however, is beyond the budget of a local festival, so the musicians agreed to perform as a duo at a substantial discount.

Sat 11:00 — TALK: ART HISTORY
Michaela Čadilová – Gotizující madony v 17. století
Muzeum Baroka, Kostelní nám. 153

In her talk, art historian Michaela Čadilová will present the intriguing phenomenon of sculptures with Gothic features in Baroque settings. Art historians face the question of whether these are an original inspiration drawn from the past within Baroque buildings, or merely a survival. The question of the artist’s role in Gothic art also comes up.

Sat 12:30 — EXHIBITION
Matyáš Chochola & Ladislav Vondrák – „Tak Čau“
Muzeum Baroka, Kostelní nám. 153

This selling exhibition by Matyáš Chochola and Ladislav Vondrák follows up on their show at the U Dobrého pastýře gallery in Brno, where they addressed the notion of identity. The exhibition at Muzeum baroka in Uničov is a loose continuation, presenting artifacts rooted in a performative approach. A finished stage design on fan T-shirts, for sale.

Sat 14:30 — TALK: THEATER
Peter Gonda – Hladanie autenticity
Muzeum Baroka, Kostelní nám. 153

Peter Gonda’s talk will present the work he does together with stage designer Jitka Pospíšilová and dramaturg Barbora Namerová at the Bohnice Psychiatric Hospital. In theater workshops held twice a week, they work with a changing group of patients hospitalized in Bohnice. The group staged one performance — Neklid (Restlessness), a site-specific piece in the Bohnice Laundry — in the fall of 2015. They are currently working on a second.

Sat 15:30 — TALK: GRAPHIC DESIGN
Zdeněk Kvasnica, Jozef Ondrík – Deep Throat
Muzeum Baroka, Kostelní nám. 153

Zdeněk Kvasnica and Jozef Ondrik, founders of the project and graphic design studio Deep Throat, will present its idea and the direction it has taken so far. The small independent studio is now based in Prague. It defines itself as a platform for dialogue and sees solutions themselves in the perception of one’s own surroundings.

Sat 17:00 — EXHIBITION
Nikola Tláskalová – Banány
Trafo gallery, Šumperská 1421

What makes things become symbols? In an age overflowing with symbols, images, and texts, can we ever get to things as such? Was it ever possible? Nikola Tláskalová’s graduation project from the advertising photography studio at Tomas Bata University in Zlín uses various photographic genres to map today’s situation, in which the banana is perceived more as a sexual reference than as a fruit. The series Banány (Bananas) pushes these clichés and connotations to the extreme, trying in this way to make visible the limits and limited validity of our stereotypes of thought.

Sat 20:00 — CONCERT
M. Švédová and J. Burian (Kyklos Galaktikos) – tyto alba
Koncertní síň, Haškova 217

For Saturday evening, the duo of Jan Burian and Michaela Švédová of Kyklos Galaktikos has prepared their project tyto alba, which focuses on sound performances, improvisations, and installations. The music is created directly for specific places, and often from sounds discovered there. Tyto alba let the spaces themselves play. For their improvisations they seek out all kinds of places and make use of their acoustic uniqueness. The result might be a musical landscape or sound poetry.
